Juniper berries are actually the female seed cones from various species of junipers. We call them juniper berries due to the fleshy appearance. While juniper berries are added in fresh or dried form to add flavour or spice to food, the oil extracted from the juniper berries is a popular choice in aromatherapy and perfumery.
This essential oil needs to be blended to a strength of 2% with a carrier oil for use in massage. Juniper oil is often used in massage to help soothe tired or sore muscles, while its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties simultaneously cleanse and tone your skin.
As this Juniper oil is of essential oil quality, it can also be vaporised, using an oil burner or vaporiser. When vaporised, it produces an earthy, stimulating scent and can help clear your head and nose. If you are feeling decongested you can add a few drops to a bowl of steaming water, pop and towel over your head and breathe in the fumes. You can also add the drops to a bowl of hot water and allow the fumes to occupy the room.
